Why do we allow the monetary system to get in the way of helping people when the resources are available?

I wasn't aware we had a choice in using money, do you accept loafs of bread instead of a paycheck? I watched a few minutes of that, but not about to sit here for two hours on your link, so not sure which people we should help without giving them money.
