In the novel Slaughterhouse 5, what is the the significance of the title to the novel?

Billy Pilgrim, a WW II soldier, is the central character of the novel. The Germans capture him and he is sent to Dresden for imprisonment. He is imprisoned, along with many other prisoners, in "Slaughterhouse Number 5".
